Second-Degree Burns

Bronx Attorneys Fighting for the Rights of New York City Accident Victims

At the Jesse Minc Law Group, our team of experienced and skilled Bronx burn injury lawyers represents victims of serious burn injuries, including those involving second-degree burns and third-degree burns, throughout the New York City area. We limit the number of cases that we accept in order to be sure that we can give each and every burn injury client our full attention and care. We are proud of the human touch that we apply to every case; our clients have direct access by phone to their attorney, and they never should worry about getting transferred to support staff when they are trying to get an answer to a question that requires the attention of a lawyer. We know that our clients come to us for advice and counsel, and part of providing that service is ensuring that our clients feel that their cases are being properly attended to by their lawyer. There is no need to take our word for it, though—our 95 percent rate of success in the courtroom and at the negotiating table speaks for itself.

New York City is one of the most vibrant, diverse, and energetic cities in the world. For all of the opportunities that the city offers, though, there are many risks, including car accidents, accidents involving public transportation, construction site accidents, and more. Among the most painful injuries are those caused by burns. The pain at the time of the injury can be severe, and it can persist for long afterwards. The damage caused by even a minor burn injury can also be quite serious if prompt medical attention is not obtained. Legal claims for burn injuries can be complicated, requiring a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the burn and the liable party or parties.

Second-Degree Burn Injuries

Burn injuries generally fall into four categories, or degrees. First-degree burns affect the outer layer of skin, known as the epidermis, and are the least serious type of burn injury. They may require medical assistance, but they rarely result in permanent scarring. Third-degree burns are among the most serious, affecting all layers of skin tissue. Burns that extend even deeper into muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and other organs are known as fourth-degree burns. Third- and fourth-degree burns always cause long-term scarring, and they can also cause impaired functioning, the loss of one or more limbs, or even death. Often, accident victims who suffer third or fourth degree burns require long hospital admissions and surgeries such as skin grafting and amputations. Treatment for these serious burn injuries is not only exorbitantly expenensive, but exacts a cost of indescribable pain and suffering upon the victims of these horrific burn injuries.

Second-degree burns, also known as partial thickness burns, penetrate past the epidermis into deeper levels of skin tissue, but not through the entirety of the skin. This type of burn causes the skin to redden, and blistering is common. Second-degree burns are extremely painful. Since they affect multiple layers of skin but do not destroy nerve endings, they can actually be more painful than third-degree burns, at least in the immediate aftermath of the burn itself.

Most second-degree burns heal within a few weeks without scarring, provided that the burn victim receives prompt and proper medical care. Loss of function due to a second-degree burn is likely to be temporary, but can result in permanent disfigurement and loss of function in certain serious cases. Second-degree burns to sensitive areas like the face, hands, or feet, or the groin, may require additional medical attention. Antibiotic creams and ointments are a common treatment to help prevent infections, as well as over-the-counter pain medications. If a second degree burn results in infection, surgery such as irrigation and debridement or skin grafting may be required to repair necrotic and damaged tissue affected by the burn injury.

Bringing a Legal Claim Based on Second-Degree Burns

Many of these burns happen in accidents that were caused because someone other than the victim failed to take adequate precautions. A property owner may have failed to properly keep up their premises, a driver may have acted carelessly behind the wheel, or one of the entities in charge of a construction site may not have taken measures to protect the safety of workers. When serious injuries result, our attorneys can help victims bring a claim to seek damages for their burns. These can cover medical treatment, any future medical procedures that may be needed, lost income and earning capacity, and their pain and suffering, which is often severe. Claims may be brought under the theory of negligence or, in the case of construction site accidents, under provisions of the New York Labor Law that the defendant may have violated. Whatever the circumstance, our team of burn injury lawyers will listen to your story, analyze the facts of your case, and inform you of your legal options.

When I got hurt after falling on a scaffold on a construction site, I could not work in construction anymore and did not know how I could support my family. I turned to Jesse Minc and I am very happy that I met him. He also discusses my case in Spanish with me when I want to, and that always made me feel comfortable. I believe that he is the best lawyer in New York City and I would recommend him to anybody who is injured.

After I was very badly hurt in a construction accident and could not work anymore, I turned to Jesse Minc. I have had a lot of lawyers over the years, but he is the best I ever had. Because I was a member of Local 6A Concrete Workers Union, I lost a lot of benefits, my pension and income when I got hurt and he made sure I understood how I could recover what I had lost. He and his team have been a Godsend to me and my family, and I am so glad that I chose him to represent us. Luke Rosa, Bronx, New York

My experience with Jesse Minc's firm was very rewarding. I personally dealt with Jesse Minc, who was a class act as my lawyer. He was always on call with any questions or help I needed in the process of my lawsuit. Jesse recovered a high six figure sum for a slip and fall accident I endured. He got the case settled in a reasonable time. If you are in need of lawyers for a lawsuit in New York City I highly recommend Jesse Minc's firm, they got me a very high settlement and were there for me personally every step of the way. Thanks to all the lawyers and staff. Salvador Ruiz, Brooklyn, New York

When I got hurt on a construction site and could not work anymore, one of my brothers from the Concrete Workers Local 6A union recommended Jesse Minc to be my lawyer and I am very happy I picked him to represent me. He really does have the human touch that a lot of lawyers lack. I would recommend Jesse Minc to anyone injured in a construction accident because he will fight to the end of the earth for his clients. Joseph Toro, Bronx, New York
