Traumatic Brain Injuries
The thing that separates humans from the rest of the creatures on this earth is our ability to comprehend and analyze the world around us in very sophisticated ways. What connects us to society – to those who matter most to us in our lives, such as close family members and friends – is the sharing of experiences and memories. When tragedy strikes, and a serious personal injury accident results in a traumatic brain injury, these important aspects of an accident victims’ life are often taken away, leaving them unable to understand and cope with the world around them, and unable to interact with and provide for the ones they love as they could before someone else’s negligence robbed them of these abilities. Traumatic brain injuries are among the most serious injuries imaginable, as they often have the unique quality of robbing an accident victim of a part of their humanity, their personality, and their ability to be self-reliant and supportive of their families and other loved ones, throwing their lives, and those of their family members, into painful chaos.

A “traumatic brain injury” generally refers to direct trauma to the head that causes damage to the brain and its surrounding structures. As its name would suggest, a “traumatic brain injury”, as opposed to other types of brain injuries, refers to an injury caused by trauma, most often due to some type of serious accident, whether caused by negligence or otherwise. These brain injuries occur in varying degrees of severity, ranging from mild concussions to fatal injuries involving an object penetrating the skull and brain. As of 2013, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control, the leading causes of traumatic brain injuries across the United States included fall accidents including trip-and-fall and slip-and-fall accidents, as well as falls from height on construction sites. The second-most-common type of accident resulting in traumatic brain injuries was being struck by a falling object, whether on a construction site or otherwise. The third-most-common type of accident resulting in traumatic brain injuries included serious motor vehicle accidents such as car accidents and truck accidents.
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, across the United States in 2010, per each 100,000 people in the United States population, there were approximately 716 brain injuries requiring an emergency room visit, 92 brain injuries that required long-term hospitalization, and 17 brain injuries that resulted in death. In 2013, there were approximately 2.8 million traumatic brain injury-related emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths across the United States, with 50,000 of these resulting in fatalities, and 282,000 ultimately resulting in long-term hospitalizations. Despite increased national and statewide safety standards designed to mitigate the effects of serious motor vehicle accidents including car accidents and truck accidents, incidences of serious traumatic brain injuries are on the rise. Between 2007-2013, traumatic brain injury-related emergency room visits increased by 47%, though hospitalization rates decreased by 2.5% and death rates decreased by 5%.What are Some of the Most Common Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injuries?
Symptoms of traumatic brain injuries vary widely, and depend upon the severity of the head trauma caused by the accident. For example, in a mild traumatic brain injury situation (e.g., a concussion sustained in a low-speed car accident), symptoms may include loss of consciousness, headaches, nausea and vomiting, speech problems, insomnia, narcoleptic symptoms (sleeping too much), and dizziness or losses of coordination and balance. Mild traumatic brain injuries can also cause sensory symptoms including oversensitivity to light, blurred vision, changes in the accident victim’s ability to taste or smell, and ringing in the ears. Mild traumatic brain injuries can also cause cognitive deficits including problems with memory and concentration, mood changes, and symptoms of depression.
Moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries generally cause many of the same symptoms as are seen in accident victims who have suffered mild traumatic brain injuries, only the symptoms are more pronounced and severe, and tend to last much longer or are permanent. Additionally, victims of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury accidents often experience convulsions and seizures, dilation of the pupils, drainage from the ears and nose, weakness and numbness in their extremities, profound confusion and changes in personality, slurred speech, and, in extremely serious cases, comas and other altered states of consciousness, or death.Committed Bronx Accident Lawyers Helping Victims of Traumatic Brain Injuries Reclaim Their Independence
